ABOUT
Sephardic Community Health (SCH) Inc. is a Brooklyn-based not-for-profit that aims to build a nursing home in Brooklyn, New York. The facility will be located at 1455 Coney Island Avenue, on the site of the former Brooklyn Center nursing home.
Our Mission & Community Roots
SCHC is the vision of two well-established community members, Michael Haddad and Moshe Adelman, who have lived in the Brooklyn community for many years. They recognized a critical need for a rehab and nursing facility in the area — a need that has gone unmet in Midwood, a large and vibrant community that, surprisingly, lacks such a resource.
This void has made it difficult for families who wish to keep their elderly loved ones close to home — especially during the Sabbath and Jewish holidays, when Orthodox Jews do not operate cars.
Another major gap was the lack of a facility that caters to the unique cultural and religious customs of the Sephardic Syrian community. Despite being home to thousands of families, Brooklyn has never had a nursing home specifically attuned to these needs.
The Facility
To address this, Michael and Moshe negotiated the rights to the property and intend to develop a state-of-the-art, 240-bed skilled nursing facility. The new building will feature the latest in rehab and nursing accommodations and equipment.
Importantly, it will also include:
A community synagogue
A dedicated activity area to engage and serve local residents
Focus on Quality Care
A beautiful building was never the end goal — Michael and Moshe were just as focused on ensuring the highest quality of care. To bring this vision to life, they partnered with Shimi Pelman and his son Jonathan Pelman, who will serve as CEO and COO, respectively.
